Escort Power Roof - Electrical supply

Post by paul6car on Wed Oct 07, 2015 2:41 pm

I have a problem on 1997 Ford Escort Cabriolet

The power roof fails to operate.

I have electrically disconnected the hydraulic pump motor and fed it from an external battery, the roof operates perfectly both up and down. Proving both the motor and the hydraulics.

Both the raise and lower relays in the boot pull in when the switches in the passenger compartment are operated. The thermal fuse is intact.

On checking the supply to the relay contacts I am unable to find a live feed, the earth is good.

I have ensured that the ignition switch is set to position 1. In fact I have tried all positions.

All fuses I can locate are intact.

The Haynes manual does not provide a wiring diagram for the power hood, but says that as well as the 2 relays and thermal fuse in the boot (which I have located) there are 2 relays and a fuse under the driver’s side of the dashboard above the main fusebox. There are several relays here and as far as I can see only one 20 amp fuse which is intact.

Do you have any idea which relays and fuse are for the power hood or are there others somewhere else?

Is there a wiring diagram published which covers the hood electrics?

Please Help

There is a wiring diagram but I'm not sure it's on the new forum Jan will know and may be able to help. I'm about to start removing the dash on mine at the weekend so I'll have a look at the relays under three and try and get some pics.

got a few pics, when its safe to re connect the battery i'll try pulling the relays and see if the hood still works

unfortunately as you say there is very little info on power hoods available only thing I can find is what you know already 20amp fuse and relay somewhere down passanger side footwell so I suggest a bit of old fashioned diagnostic work first thing I would do is pull out the switch its a switch so should have a live feed on one of the wires 12V I would presume when ignition is off or on number one but try all ignition key positions if there is no live let me know and I will direct you where to go next

I had a similar problem with my first Mk6 - advised that to right it would cost in excess of £200 (and that was a few years ago). So just bypassed the box which stops you putting the roof up/down while the engine is running. Result a much healthier battery in the winter...when I still like to have the roof down as much as possible. I'm not daft enough to try doing it while I am driving....
